Description
Built in white marble threshold at Century XVI (1512 or 1520), this "Pelourinho" (pillory) was the symbol of the municipal power and the severity of the slave order and place of execution. Consists of a Gothic column topped by an armillary sphere which is the symbol of sailors.
Being the smallest of the monuments of the "Cidade Velha" (Old Town), is also one of the most significant, because recalls the time when the disobedient slaves were publicly flogged. This testimony survived over time and was one of the first monuments to benefit from restoration in the late 1960s.
